From Crisis to Confidence: Nature as a Catalyst for Healing

Lake Nixon doesn’t tend to have a lot of visitors during the dead of winter. But this past January, youth from Immerse Arkansas started making regular visits to Lake Nixon: enjoying the outdoors, learning new things, and finding sanctuary in Creation.

“[W]e facilitate individual and small group fishing, hiking, and outdoor education sessions for teens from foster care, older youth transitioning from foster care, young mothers, and other young adults overcoming adversity,” says Jimmie DuVall, a Recreational Therapist at Immerse, and the leader of most of these visits.

“This partnership with Lake Nixon allows our youth and young adults to connect with nature and adventure in a supporting and welcoming environment. Youth catch their first fish, set personal records, relax in hammocks for the first time, and experience healing just by spending time outdoors.”

We are deeply grateful that Lake Nixon can be a space for local community partners, offering experiences that are truly healing for the mind, body, and soul.
